Viterbo is known as ‘the city of Popes’ because it was the papal residence from 1257 to 1281. Palazzo dei Papi, the city’s most emblematic building, hosted the first and longest conclave in history. Surrounded by imposing walls, Viterbo is also known as the ‘city of beautiful fountains’ due to its numerous medieval fountains, and its noble castles are a symbol of the city’s glorious past. Don’t miss the medieval quarter of San Pellegrino, which has remained almost intact for 800 years. The most important event in the city of Viterbo is the Transport of the Machine of Santa Rosa, which is an illuminated tower, 30 metres high and weighing about 5 tonnes: every year, on 3 September, it is carried on the shoulders of over 100 men called “facchini” through the streets of the city centre.
